Flasher Batteries

Every year it seems one of my batteries for the flasher goes down.   Won’t take a charge.   Time to replace it.   You have options.  Most of us carry a unit on a hopper bucket, so the physical size can vary a bit.  If you are using the plastic carrier that came with the flasher, you might need to bust out the tape measure if you are going to go the economical route.

You just need to look at the Amp Hours.    Most of the links above are for 9ah batteries.   They will last you 2-3 trips before needing to be charged.   You can save some money going to a 7ah battery, but you will need to charge it more often.

Now Steph and I carry spare batteries.  As I said before physical size is not that big of a deal in the hopper bucket.   The battery is in the big bucket on the botton that the hopper rig is hooked to, while the smaller bucket, on top, holds your catch.

I don’t recommend putting the spare in the hopper bucket, if you choose to carry one, but in a spare dry bucket in your sled.    My Dry Bucket has saved me many times.  poolbucket

  • Dry Gloves
  • Extra Hat
  • Extra lures and baits
  • Hand warmer packs
  • Lunch

If you know a friend who buys their pool chemicals at a warehouse store, they often come in buckets with screw on lids.   Perfect for staying dry in all weather.  Buy them a six pack of beer and they will save them up for you and your fishing pals.

Well we are about to embark on another year of the WIFC. This year we will be competing in Ternopil, Ukraine. WIFC XIII will be held February 15-21, 2016 on Ternopil Lake (Map).

We also have been told that there will be a live internet feed from the ice. If you want you can get up early or stay up late to watch the competition over the internet on Feb 20 & 21. Also weigh in will be broadcast as it was last year. When these links are available we will post them on our USA Ice Facebook page, on our USAiceTeam.org website and of course at MiIceGuys.com.

But we need help, financial help. It costs each of us several thousands of dollars to travel and stay in Ukraine. You can help by making a donation at This link through Paypal.   You do not need a paypal account you can just use a credit card.

For everyone who donates, We will add you to a special list to email out specifics on links and times for the broadcasts. I will also, Ukrainian internet permitting, send some photos of us on the ice. After our return I will send you a link to a gallery of photos and videos from the event.

Ice-Bags-Cotton-DrawstringI ran across a cool website today.  lakeice.squarespace.com  It is a blog and information site run by a true Ice Geek.  If you are really interested in how ice forms, this site has some awesome information.

I also would love to have all of you review this guide.    Survive a Fall Through Ice and it comes from a site with a cool name Art of Manlinessinstall-ice-auger-blades-295x195

Gearing Up for Ice!

Most of us have enjoyed this last little blast of warm weather.  We’ve gotten out mowed the lawn for the last time, raked leaves, stored the boat and got things ready for winter.  However reality is coming soon with colder weather and eventually snow and ice.

Cadillac Group A 001This in-between time is a great time to get out the ice gear and get things ready to go.  Put new line on the rods, check your selection of ice jigs, you know you could always use more.  Make sure the batteries in your electronics are charged up and ready to go.  Don’t forget to check the blades on your auger, maybe it’s time for a new set.  Be sure to have all of your accessories on hand too.  You’ll need a skimmer or two, maybe a spud, plus boot cleats and ice picks going across early ice with little to no snow are always a good idea.

In closing, the anticipation for many ice anglers is really starting to build and we can’t wait to get out there and start fishing.  Most important remember to be safe on the ice, especially early ice.   First ice can be a tricky time of year, so be sure to take extra steps to insure your safety.  Such as fish with a buddy, let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back,  taking along a life jacket, rope and ice picks is never a bad idea.  Be safe and good fishing this ice season!
