Well we are about to embark on another year of the WIFC. This year we will be competing in Ternopil, Ukraine. WIFC XIII will be held February 15-21, 2016 on Ternopil Lake (Map).
We also have been told that there will be a live internet feed from the ice. If you want you can get up early or stay up late to watch the competition over the internet on Feb 20 & 21. Also weigh in will be broadcast as it was last year. When these links are available we will post them on our USA Ice Facebook page, on our USAiceTeam.org website and of course at MiIceGuys.com.
But we need help, financial help. It costs each of us several thousands of dollars to travel and stay in Ukraine. You can help by making a donation at This link through Paypal. You do not need a paypal account you can just use a credit card.
For everyone who donates, We will add you to a special list to email out specifics on links and times for the broadcasts. I will also, Ukrainian internet permitting, send some photos of us on the ice. After our return I will send you a link to a gallery of photos and videos from the event.
Anthony & Chad have just won the NAIFC tournament on Lake Metigoshe, in Bottineau, ND with 14.14 lbs.
Now they are off to Hebgen Lake, in West Yellowstone, MT where the won 1st place in 2015.
I ran across a cool website today. lakeice.squarespace.com It is a blog and information site run by a true Ice Geek. If you are really interested in how ice forms, this site has some awesome information.
I also would love to have all of you review this guide. Survive a Fall Through Ice and it comes from a site with a cool name Art of Manliness
Gearing Up for Ice!
Most of us have enjoyed this last little blast of warm weather. We’ve gotten out mowed the lawn for the last time, raked leaves, stored the boat and got things ready for winter. However reality is coming soon with colder weather and eventually snow and ice.
This in-between time is a great time to get out the ice gear and get things ready to go. Put new line on the rods, check your selection of ice jigs, you know you could always use more. Make sure the batteries in your electronics are charged up and ready to go. Don’t forget to check the blades on your auger, maybe it’s time for a new set. Be sure to have all of your accessories on hand too. You’ll need a skimmer or two, maybe a spud, plus boot cleats and ice picks going across early ice with little to no snow are always a good idea.
In closing, the anticipation for many ice anglers is really starting to build and we can’t wait to get out there and start fishing. Most important remember to be safe on the ice, especially early ice. First ice can be a tricky time of year, so be sure to take extra steps to insure your safety. Such as fish with a buddy, let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back, taking along a life jacket, rope and ice picks is never a bad idea. Be safe and good fishing this ice season!
December 3rd 5-8pm join Steph and Chas at Al & Bob’s Sports on Division in Grand Rapids for the first of many Ice Seminars. Scott DeVries promises all kinds of deals on ice fishing equipment. Enjoy special food and beverage offerings from Schmohz and The Grillin Guys, while you learn some of the tricks that the guys use fishing here in Michigan and in the World Championships in Europe.
We hosted the Michigan Practice for USA Ice team and had Brody Carter from Fox 17 come out and learn more about WIFC XII. Check out his report here
How many times have you slipped out fishing? I really don’t like it. Maybe you don’t go all the way down, but you still wrench your back. Stopper has some real economical solutions to the problem. You can swing by your local sporting goods store and pick up most of these options for around $20.
If you want something real aggressive check out the Boot Chizels. These things will tear up a hardwood floor fast, so don’t wear them in the house. I put a pair on and they did a number on the OSB I put on the steps into the house. The nice thing is they come on and off real easy. One of the simplest designs I have seen, but they work great.
Save your back and backside – as well as your dignity and grab a pair for you and your fishing buddy.
