Flasher 101

I found this video  on Youtube on the basics of tuning and reading a flasher.   It is very similar for other brands as well, but I thought this one did a nice simple job.   Watch it here   youtube

Tungsten Fish Candy

My favorite ice jig of all time is the Pelkie Skandia ice jigs from K&E Tackle. Made of heavy tungsten, I can get my bait back down in front of the fish fast, before they move. CS_SKP_CHARTWith ultra sharp hooks and superior finishes, I haven’t fished a better jig yet. Always coming through with what the fisherman wants, K&E continues that tradition for the 2014/2015 ice season. For us panfish guys there are new colors of the original Pelkie Tungsten jigs including black with different color glitter (gold, red, purple, and green) as well as (green, orange, chartreuse, and pink) candy stripped glow jigs. These new colors are offered in both size 12 & 14.

BLK_SKP_CHARTAlso, don’t forget about the 8 colors of tungsten moon jigs that were introduced last season!!! Plus, Skandia is coming out with a NEW Diamond Eye Tungsten jig. Stay tuned for more details on that one….. I can’t wait until I get the opportunity to use these new patterns out on the ice!

Kahtoola MICROspikes

Well I finally got a chance to try out the new spikes that Steph got me. Katoola I have had several pairs and was about to go to building my own. Not many spikes fit my size 14 boots and give you solid coverage. These things are like wearing my Redwing Looger boots in the woods. Now for those of you in West Michigan you know that Mother Nature has been teasing us with cold and way too much snow to give us safe ice. So when I got a call from a friend that Campau lake had gotten 3.5 inches of ice, I was ready to go. Now some of you have heard the story from last year about the day I slipped and fell on Muskellunge Lake and scared the crap out of everyone that that 4-5 inches was going to blow out when my fine beer drinking wide load hit the ice, it was the first thought in my mind. So I put the new spikes on the big green thinsulate boots and headed out. I felt like I had the traction of a T9 dozer. The pack snow did not build up and just make a glob on the bottom of my boots, masking the spikes. The heavy duty chains hooked into the 400 Stainless spike bars with 3/8 inch sharp spikes easily shed the snow and slush as we made our way out to catch some fish.

I decided I was going to keep mine right on my boots and just slip on some smaller shoes to drive in, not sure how much love they would give the floor mats and pedals in the truck.

When your ready to get serious about not slipping, check out Kahtoolas.

Electronics

Well you have heard us talk about them and I thought maybe a few of you might want to look into some good units to help you get on the fish faster this winter.

Getting a flasher can be one of the most exciting things as you get ready for this years season.   Be sure to keep listening as Steph has the new FLX-28 and will be writing a review as soon as he can get on the ice.

Whipper Rods

WhiprComboWell I was finally able to get to try my new 24″ Whip’r Rod by K & E.   I have a new favorite.  By extending the rod blank way past the reel, you get jiggin balance like I have never experienced.   You aren’t working the nose heavy rod and can feel the jig so transparently.

Steph and I found a nice low suspension of Crappie and went to work on them.  Ludington13After a couple of hours in the Hamlin lake wind we were able show a nice stack of slabs.   We did however get quite a few looks from the guys in the tournament around us.   One on ice observer from the tournament committee told me I was showing up more than a couple of the contestants.

So next time you are in the market for a new rod, check out the Whip’r.  I found it to be a lot less work and a lot more sensitive than my other spinning rods.   I might have to call Jack to get a longer one for those spring days in the canoe.

I wanted to share another story about our buddy Al. He has nerve damage and cannot feel his hands. We hooked him up with one of the Whip’r combos a few weeks ago and by resting the cork tail on the rod on his wrist, where he has feeling, he has been able to feel the bite and other signals through the rod for the first time in over 15 years.

Skandia Tungsten Jigs

0000000079603  I had the great opportunity to meet Jim & Jack from K & E Stopper Lures at an event in Diamondale, MI,  they bring us the excellent tungsten lures of the Skandia line.  Now I first found these lures at Meijer of all places.   A lot of my fishing buddies are convinced they have to spend $5-$6 for a tungsten lures, but I was getting them for $3.    I had to try them.   Steph and I used a few in the almost non existent 2011-12 season and were very pleased at the drop rate and the way they hang and present.

At times we have found ourselves fishing in deep water trying to get back to a school of fish before some large predator runs them off.  firetiger Tungsten is the trick.   We worked with meat and plastic on the hook.    #12 & #14 sizes and the result . . . a lot of fish.    So if you are looking for a fair priced jig with some fish catching potential, try these out.
